There hasn’t been any time for the January blues at The Box this month. The past four weeks have been very exciting.

We’ve announced our opening date and programme as well as two important public art commissions for the city. Visitors are going to be in for a treat from Saturday 16 May when they come in to see our brand new galleries, our inaugural contemporary art exhibition ‘Making It’ featuring five international artists and our major ‘Mayflower 400: Legend and Legacy’ exhibition.

Our brilliant run in the press has continued with hundreds of items of coverage including BBC Radio 4: Start The Week, The Sunday Telegraph, Mail Online and the New York Times.

On site, our ‘Reload’ of over two million objects is well and truly underway. Staff are working alongside our removal firm contractors to get everything into the building. It’s a huge team effort. Great progress is being made each day and there’s a real sense of achievement amongst everyone as the shelves and racking start to fill up.

Elsewhere, build and fit out works continue at pace across all our spaces. Light boxes, showcases, plinths, interactives, graphics, green screens, archways and stud walls are just some of the many elements that are being installed.

The fit out of our shop has begun and our Commercial Team is busy researching and collating a fantastic range of products to sell.

The conservation of a popular mural by artist Wyn George, previously located in the children’s library, is now complete (see our pic below for an image of the work in progress). The mural will be a focal point in the learning room that school, college and university groups will use when they visit The Box.

Two other huge pieces of work that we’re making great strides with are the development of a new digital storage system which will allow us to manage and preserve our digital assets as effectively as possible, and the configuration and implementation of a brand new box office and ticketing system.

Here’s the final time lapse clip from our construction site web cam in which you can see work taking place to complete our public realm. The camera has provided us with some great monthly glimpses into all the hard work that’s taken place during the construction phase. There are more exciting announcements planned for February so stay tuned!
