Our Search room is open two days a week and can be used by anyone free of charge, for their research and to make enquiries. Bookings are recommended.

Changes to opening hours in 2019:
The Record Office will close at the end of Thursday 29 August in order to prepare for the move to The Box. The archive service will resume as normal at The Box in April 2020. Find out more about our opening hours using the link at the bottom of this page.
Using the Search room
Most of the records we hold are unique and therefore visitors will be asked to register with us. Identification showing name and address or other accepted ID is required (see ‘Visiting Us’).
To keep the documents for future generations, staff and visitors are encouraged to be careful when handling them. Gloves are not required, but we do ask that hands are washed and dry before using the archives. Pens are not used when in this room (because there’s a risk of ink leakage), so pencils or laptops can be used for notetaking.
Devices can be used for taking photographs for a small daily fee – please ask the member of staff at the desk first.
There are small free to use lockers for belongings (ie coats and bags). There are facilities onsite for taking refreshments, alternatively there are outlets nearby.
