What’s at Elizabethan House

Experience a real feeling of history

On Plymouth’s historic Barbican, you’ll find an ancient doorway that takes you back in time to Drake’s Plymouth. Down panelled hallways and up spiral stairs, you’ll find yourself in the furnished home of an Elizabethan merchant or sea captain. Mind your head on the low ceilings and feel the creaking oak of the sloping floors as you explore the Elizabethan House. See our restored kitchen and gardens on the ground floor. View the dining room and parlour on the first floor and bedrooms on the second floor.

Read about the very interesting history of the house, to find out who lived here over the ages and in what conditions they lived in.

The Spice Box

Set within the Elizabethan House, ‘The Spice Box’ moved audiences across the centuries – from the intimacy of the family kitchen to the magnitude of global exploration; immersing them in sounds, smells and tastes of the past.

‘The Spice Box’ was a Barbican Theatre production created in partnership with Plymouth City Council’s Arts and Heritage Service and performed by Company b Theatre from May – July 2015. The project was supported by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund, Arts Council England and Plymouth Culture.
