About the Film Archive

The Box has been responsible for the former South West Film and Television Archive (SWFTA) collections since 2018.

SWFTA was established in 1993 following the closure of the Television South West Studios in Plymouth. The collection comprises the catalogues of former ITV franchises, Westward Television (1961-1981) and Television South West (1982-1993). SWFTA became the main repository in the region for film and moving image, dating back to the 1890s. The film archive also includes paper records, photos and legacy equipment either donated or retained from its television broadcast days. Film and TV reports, documentaries, public and corporate films and videos as well as amateur donated collections cover an area from the Isles of Scilly to Bournemouth and Gloucestershire, and includes collections from county and unitary authorities in the South West.

With responsibility for one of the largest regional film archives in the UK, The Box is a member of the Film Archives UK (FAUK) and recognised as holding one of the UK’s significant screen heritage collections. The Box is a member of the British Film Institute’s Film Audience Network (FAN) in the Film Hub South West. As part of The Box development, the collections will be displayed and made accessible once The Box opens in 2020.

We are currently preparing our collections to be catalogued, digitised and moved to The Box. During this time, we are only able to respond to requests on a case-by-case basis. Please contact us for more information.

We provide archive film and video for exhibitions and screenings, host educational workshops and sell footage for professional productions and working with filmmakers and broadcasters. We are an active supporter of community projects.
